The DeeMaxx Difference

Close-up image of DeeMaxx disc brake installation

When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. DeeMaxx addresses this problem by incorporating drainage holes in the hat section of each rotor to provide even more ventilation than other brands. Combining these holes with the conventional venting design allows DeeMaxx brakes to disperse heat faster. They're also able to shed moisture better, leading to less internal corrosion. The result is cooler-running, longer-lasting brakes that offer consistent performance.

DeeMaxx brakes are the only trailer brakes to satisfactorily pass the high standards of the SAE J2681 brake test. This test is designed to evaluate the friction performance of automotive brakes, so DeeMaxx's passing grade should tell you just how well made these products are.

Close-up image of DeeMaxx disc brake installation of brackets

The patented design of the caliper mounting bolt and sleeve makes installation easier while ensuring that the sleeves stay in place within the caliper. In addition, the side-support design of the caliper mounting bracket puts all of the weight on the bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.

DeeMaxx brakes perform well even in the most demanding environments, which is one of the many reasons why they are preferred by law enforcement agencies like the Texas State Patrol, U.S. Border Patrol, and U.S. Coast Guard.

Great for Campers and Boat Trailers

If you own a trailer, you know that rust and corrosion will eventually creep up no matter where you tow, especially if your equipment doesn't have any kind of protective coating or plating. But if you tow your camper or trailer in the Midwest during the winter, or if you ever launch your boat in brackish water, you'll need even more protection because of the salt you'll likely encounter.

disc brake with signs of heavy rust and corrosion

The Maxx coating on the rotors, calipers, and brackets in this brake kit helps to ensure that DeeMaxx brakes don't end up looking like the one pictured above. It offers great corrosion protection, even with occasional use in saltwater. Rust-resistant coatings are graded according to a salt spray rating. Basically, this rating shows the amount of time it takes for a material to show signs of corrosion when exposed to pure, continuous salt spray. Zinc plating typically begins to deteriorate after about 100 hours. Dacromet usually lasts for around 300 to 400 hours. DeeMaxx's Maxx coating lasts for more than 1,000 hours in the salt spray test.

The environment this test creates is much harsher than anything you'll ever experience in your journeys, but it provides a testament to how well DeeMaxx brakes resist rust and corrosion.

If you're living the salt life full-time or you live right on the coast, you'll probably want to invest in something that offers even more protection, like DeeMaxx kits that include stainless steel components for the ultimate in corrosion resistance.

Get a Safer, More Comfortable Ride

Say goodbye to the days of your truck being pushed and pulled by your trailer. Disc brakes provide a safer, more comfortable ride than drum brakes. They offer shorter stopping distances and deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds. So, you won't have to worry about things crashing around in your trailer or camper next time you reach unexpected traffic on the highway or debate if you can actually stop before that yellow light turns red.

Save Time and Money

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.

side-by-side comparison of an electric drum brake and a hydraulic disc brake

Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.

close-up image of DeeMaxx disc brake caliper parts

The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. And the caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.

This particular kit can save you time and money over other disc brakes on the market as well. A slip-on rotor may be easier to install initially, but water can find its way between the rotor and your existing hub, causing uneven rotor wear or runout. With a 1-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, water and debris can't get in to cause any corrosion or contamination.

instructions on how to bleed brakes laser etched into the back of a DeeMaxx disc brake caliper

DeeMaxx also has simple instructions for bleeding the brakes laser-etched on the back of the calipers. This convenient time saver means you'll always have the guidance you need on hand when the time comes for maintenance.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

If you want to remount your existing wheels after installing these brakes, you'll need a kit that offers the same bolt pattern. To determine the bolt pattern, count the number of bolt holes (or lug nuts) on your trailer's wheel. This will give you the first number in the pattern. To find the second number, just measure the distance between a bolt hole and the bolt hole across from it.

diagram showing how to measure even bolt pattern

For example, on wheels with an even number of bolt holes: 6 on 5-1/2" means 6 bolt holes with 5-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole across from it.

diagram showing how to measure odd bolt pattern

And with an odd number of bolt holes: 5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the farthest edge of one of the 2 farthest bolt holes.

Product seems high quality, well built and customer service was also excellent.

by:

WOrks very good. Fit on a 15" rim were not good. The site said any 15, 16 or larger. The calibers drag on the inside of rims. I had to choose to go larger size rims but did not want to go larger because the hight I was at lauching boat now. Called tech support, they worked wirh manufacture and was told to grind dowm edge or caliber. It has extra metal from mold at factory. I did about 1/4 inch end to end and all is good with about 1/8 clearaance now.

by:

Product was as expected, good quality braking system, installed easily in about 1-2 hours per wheel. Shipping and ordering was quick and easy. Time will tell more after installing on my fresh water boat trailer.
Unfortunately, it did not clear my 15” wheels properly, as indicated in the product description. I found by adding a 1/4” wheel spacer, that was just enough to get the clearance needed to prevent the calipers from rubbing on my 15” rims. (I have also seen others say that they used a grinder to take about 1/4” off the caliper body to get them to clear). This is the only reason for 4/5 stars.

by:

The customer service is spot on. I had an issue with shipping and their customer support was on it from the time I notified them to when the replacement arrived. Hard to find customer service like this these days.

by:

Emma was great at helping me purchase these parts. They arrived two days earlier than expected as well. Your videos are also very well done and full of great information. I have some painting and rust removal to do before reassembly but will send pix when complete. Thx again

by:

Still have not road tested them, but the ease of installation was great. All 4 wheels swapped out in one day.

by:

Have not installed yet but the kit appears well made. Hoping the pads hold up well.

by:

Braking effect is much more pronounced that my previous disc brakes. Parts delivered quickly. Installed to replace Knott calipers which had been locking up frequently- these calipers and rotors show no signs of corrosion or loss of brake effect after a couple of uses in saltwater. I would highly recommend purchasing mounting hardware as these do not come with any- also note if you have tandem axels you need to have “T” line splitters as the brake line inlet is standard 3/16 (or 1/8 NPT if you remove the included 90° fitting)- the Y splitter that my previous calipers used through the lower bleed fitting were too big. Very satisfied so far; just need to see how they hold up over time.

by:

I have not had much time on the road with these but from day 1 it was obvious I made the right choice. The items came in packaging that I would rate at 4 stars as there were some concerns but nothing drastic. The install was straight forward and everything went together as intended. I like the better braking control with the new system that works much better than the old set. My trailer is 2019 and the rotors were badly rotted, the calipers worked but were hanging up but these are a total game changer. Brakes work great!

by:

Well Designed and build. I took some time to remove old set - it was rusted in place reel good. But install of the new set was very easy.
The improvement in braking is very significant i am controlling brakes with electric/hydraulic actuator and the system works just like brakes on the car - very precise and sensitive.

  • Parts Needed To Add Hydraulic Brakes To 2021 Shorelander Boat Trailer
Hey Dan, thanks for reaching out. It is possible to add brakes to the 3,500 lb axle on your Shorelander trailer, as long as your axle has a brake flange welded to the base of the spindle. If no brake flange is present, they can we welded on my an axle technician, or your axle can be replaced with one that is brake-ready. If you do have a brake flange, we can get into what parts you will need. You did not mention what type of brakes you want to add, but since it is a boat trailer, adding...

  • Converting From Hydraulic Drum Brakes to Disc Brakes
Hi Mike; can you send me your axle information? Is it a 3,500 lb axle? If I had to guess it is likely a 3,500 lb axle on there right now. Assuming you have the standard 3,500 lb bearing combination you can use the DeeMaxx Disc Brake Kit # DE66YR. This uses # L68149 inner and # L44649 outer bearings. You already have the hydraulic lines so the only other thing would be an actuator for disc brakes. Assuming you want a coupler for a 2" ball and have a 3" wide tongue the # DM62VR you looked...

  • Finding Correct Disc Brake Conversion Kit For 2002 Continental Trailer
Hey Justin, thanks for reaching out. We can definitely help you convert the drum brakes on your 2002 Continental trailer to disc brakes. For a trailer like yours, you can choose either electric over hydraulic disc brakes or a surge brake disc setup. Surge brakes are very common for boat trailers since you don’t have to worry about electrical components getting damaged by water, but either option can work depending on your preference. To make sure we get you the correct kit, there are a...

Hey Ryan, thanks for reaching out. We certainly should have a disc brake kit that will work for you, but there is no way to know exactly what kit you will need based on the make and model of trailer. Hey Gary, thanks for all of the info on your axle. From that I can tell you have a 3,500 lb trailer axle with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern so the correct DeeMax disc brake kit would be the part # DE66YR. Then for a electric over hydraulic actuator kit the best option is the Hydrastar part # HBA16-252-82 as it comes with the best EOH actuator that is the most reliable and quickest reacting plus it comes with all of the electric components and brake lines so it would cover everything...

Since I'm not 100% sure what you have I can't directly answer your question, but I can tell you how to find the correct replacement. Hey Doug, your bearing numbers don't match up with current 3,500 lb trailer axle bearing configurations so I don't believe we'd have a set of hubs for your axle that would work. With that said if you somehow did get idler hubs that ift and the bolt pattern was 5 on 4-1/2 inch the # DE66YR could in theory fit but you'd need to have brake mounting flanges on the spindle currently. You can see the axle rating either on the tag near the tongue of your trailer or on the tag in the middle of the axle itself. Hey Gary, this is a great question but it comes down to what brand axle you have. The Dexter 4,400 lb axles use the same bearings as the 3,500 lb axles so your current DeeMax rotors # DE66YR would work but if instead your axle is a Lippert or AL KO brand axle they would not transfer as they use a different bearing set.
